âOh... well... That's not terrible. I was afraid my mind points would take a minus,â he said. âMaybe this die roll thing isn't as bad as I thought.â
Scruff hissed.
No.
Max shrugged. We've got no choice, he thought.
No.
âOk, whatever, let's get going,â Max said, snatching the die from the table and smushed it back into his palm.
The trip upstairs wasn't actually very difficult. They were forced to hide in adjacent rooms twice. Luckily there weren't any students and there weren't that many guards or faculty around either. Though they hadn't left yet, it seemed most of the soldiers had already retreated to their patrol ship. All of this was good for a sneaking skeleton with glowing green eyes, especially since he still had only one hit point. He couldn't possibly forget that either, the headache wouldn't let him.
The best part was that when they arrived at the big office, though the door was closed, Max could tell from the smell trail leading away that the owner had just left. So he grabbed the knob on the door that said: headmaster's office and turned it.
Amazingly enough, it opened.
Inside it was exactly like he'd seen in his head. Books and papers were neatly stacked exactly where he expected and at the back of the room, on the right side, the door to the vault room lay waiting. Max walked up to it and pulled the clasp.
Locked. Of course, it was.
âScruff... can you open this?â he asked, looking over at his companion.
The creature extended two tentacles in the perfect imitation of a shrug, like he'd done before.
âI see,â Max said.
Keys?
âYeah... I don't know,â Max replied, turning around. There wasn't a hook for them on the wall... which would be stupid considering this was a vault. He walked over to the desk, pulling the top drawer open. Writing implements, inks, paper, assorted other odds and ends. No key.
He pulled open a bunch of other drawers, checking each one, finding nothing.
Coming!
Max paused. He did indeed hear something. Footsteps. Coming toward them.
âShit!â he said, quickly pushing all the drawers closed.
The footsteps were way too close to sneak out of the room. He had to find a place to hide. He looked around. There really wasn't anything. There was furniture, but there wasn't time to push it and try to hide behind it.
Curtains! There were curtains! But wait... no... that would be stupid. Nothing was easier to notice than the form of a person hiding behind curtains. It was a staple of comedy horror shows since basically forever. Except... he was a very thin skeleton.
Bite! Bite!
Max nodded. I know Scruff, he thought, and I might just sick you on him, but for now, let's just stay quiet and not move. Deal?
Yes.
Max slipped behind the curtain, hoping to hell that he was thin enough not to be noticed immediately. Oddly, he could see through the curtain a little. He wondered why.
Crap! His eyes! If he could see through, they would glow through!
He jumped out and grabbed a letter from the desk, holding it in front of his eyes to shield the light, hoping it would be enough.
